hello Toradex community,
I’m working with a verdin Development board V1.1 and imx8mp chip that accepts 1.8V input, but the output from my sensor is 24V. I need a solution to step down the voltage safely while ensuring fast switching so that I can receive the input in real-time. What would be the best approach or components to use to achieve this without damaging the board? Any suggestions are welcome!

To safely convert a 24V sensor output to a 1.8V input for your microcontroller on the Verdin Development board V1.1 with the i.MX8MP chip, while ensuring fast switching for real-time input, you have a couple of effective options:
-
Dedicated Level Shifter IC: This is recommended for fast switching and real-time input. Level shifter ICs can handle higher frequencies and provide better signal integrity, ensuring that the microcontroller receives the correct voltage without damage. Make sure to choose a level shifter that supports the voltage levels you are working with and, if necessary, bidirectional communication.
-
Buck Converter: Another efficient solution is using a buck converter to step down the voltage from 24V to 1.8V. Buck converters are capable of handling higher currents and maintaining fast switching capabilities, making them suitable for real-time applications. Ensure that the buck converter you select can handle the input voltage and provide the necessary output current without overheating.
Additionally, regardless of the method you choose, it is crucial to implement protection features such as clamping diodes or fuses to prevent overvoltage conditions that could damage the microcontroller. Always test the voltage conversion circuit with a multimeter before connecting it to the microcontroller to ensure the output voltage is stable at 1.8V. This will help prevent any potential damage from incorrect voltage levels.
