What is the recommended way of installing or updating an image on colibri imx8x?

Hi,

I am now installing the tezi image using the easy installer from SD card and USB stick. But I read in the link Distro Boot | Toradex Developer Center as below. So what is the recommended way of installing or updating an image?

Toradex does not maintain support for distro booting from external media like USB and SD Card due to the difficulty in maintaining this feature, particularly on newer NXP i.MX 8/8X SoCs with SECO/SCFW. While this feature may work on specific SoMs and BSP releases, it is not guaranteed, and developers are advised to avoid depending on it. However, those who still wish to attempt it can refer to the article Load Easy Installer From External Media (SD Card/USB Stick) for insights into distro booting other systems, though they do so at their own risk.

Hi @jesvinonnet ,

May I ask the reason on why you want to install Tezi with Tezi? Or am I understanding wrong ?

You can use Tezi to install the image from USB stick or SD card.

Kevin

Hi @kevin.tx ,

Sorry for the confusion. I mean a tezi compatible yocto image.

If we can install image from USB or SD card, then what does the above mentioned document means? Maybe I understood it wrongly. Can you please clarify what does it mean Toradex **does not** maintain support for distro booting from external media like USB and SD Card due to the difficulty in maintaining this feature ?

Right now I am installing my yocto image using SD card. I have both easy installer and image in the SD card and I execute the bootcmd_mmc1 command from uboot. Just want to check is there anything wrong with this approach and what is the recommended way of doing it?. I am using colibri IMX8X.

Hi @jesvinonnet,

No worries all good :+1:

Maybe let me ask you the following: Are you intending to boot from SD card or are you just installing the image from the SD card?

The document states “booting from external device”, you on the other hand mention that you want to install the image from SD card.

So as an overview, no matter how you install the image everything should work as you want it. For the case that you want to boot from the external device, then and only then Toradex does not maintain the functionality.

Maybe it would make sense to jump in a quick call and we can go over it together. To be sure that we get rid of all the confusion.

Best Regards
Kevin

Hi @kevin.tx ,

Now it is clear. Thank you for the clarification. I didn’t completely focused on the “boot” keyword. Thank you for your willingness for the call and quick response. For this topic, I am clear about it. We can have a call if I have some doubt on some other touch topic.

Hi @jesvinonnet !
