Verdin AM62 USB 3.0 capability

Hi all,

I am working with the Verdin AM62 board, and I see that the pins for super speed USB are present (USB2_SSTX and RX). We tried to connect those pins to test the USB 3.0 functionality but seems limited anyway to USB 2.0.

Also, looking at the latest datasheet, seems like the USB3.0 functionality have been removed and the USB2_SS pins are marked as “reserved”.

Does it means that the Verdin AM62 has the pins for super speed but it is not enabled? It cannot be enabled in an y way neither hw or sw? Is there any Verdin AM62 variant that supports USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Status on Verdin AM62

You are correct in your observations about the Verdin AM62’s USB SuperSpeed functionality. Based on the Verdin AM62 V1.2 datasheet (the most recent version available), the USB SuperSpeed pins are indeed present but not functional(1).

Pin Status in Latest Datasheet

The Verdin AM62 V1.2 datasheet shows the following for the USB SuperSpeed pins(1):

  • Pin 169: USB_2_SSTX_N - marked as “NC” (Not Connected) with “Reserved” compatibility group
  • Pin 171: USB_2_SSTX_P - marked as “NC” (Not Connected) with “Reserved” compatibility group
  • Pin 175: USB_2_SSRX_N - marked as “NC” (Not Connected) with “Reserved” compatibility group
  • Pin 177: USB_2_SSRX_P - marked as “NC” (Not Connected) with “Reserved” compatibility group

USB 2.0 Functionality Available

The Verdin AM62 does support full USB 2.0 functionality on both USB ports(1):

USB_1 Port:

  • Pin 163: USB_1_D_N (USB0_DM) - “Always Compatible”
  • Pin 165: USB_1_D_P (USB0_DP) - “Always Compatible”

USB_2 Port:

  • Pin 181: USB_2_D_N (USB1_DM) - “Always Compatible”
  • Pin 183: USB_2_D_P (USB1_DP) - “Always Compatible”

Answers to Your Questions

  1. Are the SuperSpeed pins present but not enabled?
Yes, the physical pins exist on the connector but are marked as “NC” (Not Connected) in the V1.2 datasheet, meaning they are not connected to any functional circuitry(1).

  2. Can USB 3.0 be enabled via hardware or software?
No, since the pins are marked as “NC” in the datasheet, there is no hardware connection to enable USB 3.0 functionality(1).

  3. Is there a Verdin AM62 variant that supports USB 3.0?
Based on the available documentation, there is no Verdin AM62 variant that supports USB 3.0 SuperSpeed functionality. The module is designed for USB 2.0 operation only(1).

The Verdin AM62 is positioned as an entry-level module in the Verdin family, focusing on cost-effectiveness and essential connectivity features rather than high-speed interfaces like USB 3.0.
