Unable to flash new image using toradex easy installer via VNC

Hi,

I want to flash new image into my board, however I can no longer access toradex easy installer via VNC (suspect there is no more vnc server running in the existing image). I managed to do it previously.

SoM: Colibri imx8QXP
Carrier: Viola plus V1.2B

Any advise or suggestion? Thank you.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

If you are unable to access the Toradex Easy Installer (Tezi) via VNC, there are a few steps you can take to resolve the issue:

  1. Reload Toradex Easy Installer:

    • If you have already flashed an OS into your Computer-on-Module, you can reload Tezi into the RAM of the module. This will bring you back to the main graphical user interface, allowing you to easily install an OS image.
    • You can follow the steps provided in the “Download and Install Toradex Easy Installer Image” section of the documentation to reload Tezi.
  2. Use Alternative Methods to Provide OS Images:

    • If VNC is not working, you can provide the OS images to Tezi using a USB Flash Drive or an SD card. This way, you can still flash the new image without needing VNC access.
  3. Check Network Configuration:

    • Ensure that your network configuration is correct and that there are no issues preventing VNC from running. Sometimes, network settings or firewall rules might block VNC access.
  4. Direct Connection:

    • If possible, connect a display and input devices (keyboard/mouse) directly to the board. This will allow you to interact with the Tezi interface directly without needing VNC.
  5. Enable Toradex CI Feed:

    • If you want to add more sources to Tezi, you can use the Feeds button to enable the Toradex Continuous Integration Server (testing) option. This might help if you need to update or reinstall Tezi.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, please provide more details about your setup and any error messages you are encountering, and I can assist you further.

Hi @Jeff89

You can find instructions on how to flash a new image in this article.

And you may need to install toradex easy installer again, if you have already installed another OS over it.

Thanks for the response. Are you able to provide more details about loading the tezi for viola plus carrier board, e.g. recovery mode. The instruction does not cover viola carrier board.

Jeff

Hi @Jeff89

Yes… I just noticed that we don’t have instructions specific for the Viola carrier board.

The steps should be similar to the Aster carrier board. And you need to use the mini-usb in the bottom side of the board.

You can skip the Step 2, this is to use the usb for power.

Hi @Jeff89

This solution worked for you?

Hi Allan,

I havent got it working yet. For step 3, there is no additional micro usb port besides the ethernet port for viola carrier board, hence I connect using usb to uart a via the extension connector (X9). Can it works as well?

Anyway, I then tried to load the tezi into the board using a window pc, however it seems unable to detect any known usb device. It only shows “success 0, failure 0, wait for known usb device appear”.

Looking through the recovery-windows README file, I am unable to find “ADB devices”. I am also unable to select “andriod_winusb.inf” using the “from disk” button as well.

By the way, how do I know that I have successfully enter into recovery mode?

Regards,
Jeff

Hi @Jeff89

The viola carrier board is a minimalist carrier board, I think there is no visual indication that you are on recovery mode.

Sorry if I’m not clear about the steps, the (STEP 3) from the guide the second micro USB is just to power on the board.

Here is what you need to do on the viola plus:

  1. (STEP 1) Connect the PC USB to the device Micro USB (at the bottom side of the viola plus).
  2. (STEP 4) Short circuit the pads on the Colibri module
  3. With the pads still short circuited, power on the device.

Then you run the Tezi script that you downloaded from here.

After you run the script, you are going to see this line.

When the device successfully enter into recovery mode, the script is going to progress.
If the script don’t progress, try:

  1. Power off the device
  2. Short circuit the pads
  3. With the pads still short circuited, power on the device
