Try to run Toradex Easy Installer from SD card

Hello,
Tried to install different image on Apalis iMX8 using Toradex Easy Installer from SD card.

1st run: Internet connection was Ok (shared connection provided on Ubuntu), I could download image list. But while selecting a particular image, the board was hung and I should reboot.

2nd run (after reboot): no internet connection.
In both cases fan didn’t turn.

Does it mean that the board is broken ?

Thanks.

3rd run: at the beginning Internet was Ok, then connection was broken, then reappeared … many times scenario repeated: i.e. Connection OK / Connection broken.
Fan doesn’t turn and radiator quite hot.
Any comments ?

Finally after multiple Connection Ok / Connection broken it became like this:

When it works, it looks like this:

and about 20 sec later:

Hi @Pavel_52 , can you try accessing from VNC from another computer? To discard is not a display issue when you see a broken display screen.

Connect a MicroUSB cable to your PC and remove JP2. You should have a RNDIS-USB connection (right now it says “No address assigned”).

I also recommend updating to the latest nightly TEZI: It should be available through the CI feeds. The current version of TEZI on that board is a bit old and could be buggy.

Let us know what that goes.

Hi Alvaro,

Here it is:

I also recommend updating to the
latest nightly TEZI.

What is TEZI ?
Can you develop, please.

Thanks. Sorry, I mean Toradex Easy Installer. Under Feeds, select “Continuous integration” and then wait for it to load. Then, select the newest version you will find available (check the latest numbers since that would indicate the build date) that says “Toradex Easy Installer”. Please install it and let us know how it goes.

Concerning Toradex Easy Installer, I picked it yesterday. Actually it’s on SD and before installing TorizonCore with evaluation container I booted from SD card. So, probably yesterday version is the last one ?

If you installed the Toradex Easy Installer from your SD, this version was (20191231) so from the 31st of December 2019 (We don’t have nightly builds in our website, hence the Continuous Integration feeds). But if you could install the TorizonCore image, it doesn’t really matter at this point.

What are you trying exactly to do at this point? You got TorizonCore installed which is what you use Toradex Easy Installer for.

If you are looking to use “Apalis iMX8 Embedded Vision Kit” demo for AWS, you should have selected the entry mentioned in the Toradex Easy Installer list, not that one. You can reload Toradex Easy Installer again if that is what you want following these steps: Downloads & Installers | Toradex Developer Center

Is Apalis iMX8 compatible with images
other than “Edge pasta detection demo”
?
Yes, as you just did, you installed TorizonCore which is not the Pasta image. What are you exactly trying to do?

I’m trying to enter into system.
It means I try to create new admin account that I was asked for (please see screenshot above)
But I can’t !!! The system refuse me … please see the system message in the right-top corner
I don’t know what I can do else.
Probably you can suggest me.
Does exist a package where I can do something … e.g. compiler code, run some C++/Python applications, try some containers … or running demo with pasta is the only thing I can do with 350$ product ?

During last successful run of Toradex Easy Installer I checked 3 checkboxes in Feeds, then refreshed.
The updated list had dozens of images.

First I wanted to explore this list, but it turned out impossible, because when I tried to move along list, screen freezed.
Then I decided to install image that I found at the begining of the list, i.e. Toradex with containers.

Is Apalis iMX8 compatible with images other than “Edge pasta detection demo” ?

Or this kit that I bought for 350$ is capable to run only this Pasta image ?

Finally I could catch moment when Internet was stable and installed TorizonCore with evaluation container.
Then reboot system.
After reboot I was invited to create administrator user.
A left Username by default (user) and entered password 2 times.
Then clicked on “Create user”
System response: “Failure to create administrator user”.
Fan still doesn’t turn !

Dear @Pavel_52

It means I try to create new admin
account that I was asked for (please
see screenshot above) But I can’t !!!
The system refuse me … please see
the system message in the right-top
corner I don’t know what I can do
else.

According to the screenshot, you are trying to access the portainer container. This is not the “system”.

some C++/Python applications, try some
containers … or running demo with
pasta is the only thing I can do with
350$ product ?

Absolutely, your pasta demo is simply our Apalis iMX8 bundled with a camera. It can run any other demos as well as your own code and examples.

I really recommend that you go deeply in detail in our Getting Started guides that you will find here, as well as the rest of our Developer page.
The portainer container is just a small part of what you can do and its use is also covered in this guides.

In the Getting Started guide you will find examples on how to use Torizon and the Portainer example that you found as well as more details in how to get started and use the Toradex HW and SW. Please kindly take the time to read the already existing documentation and then ask smaller/more specific questions here. I greatly recommend you go through it since a lot of the questions you probably have are covered in our guides and documentation!

Also, since your issue with Toradex Easy Installer has been solved, let me have this questions set as solved. Please open a new question for the fan issue you are currently facing showing some photos of the current setup as well as the current version of the HW and SW you are using. Apalis iMX8 and the Ixora carrier board combination should turn on the fan if you are using Torizon version 4.0.0 and you have the fan connected on the X6 connector of the Ixora.

Dear Alvaro,

According to the screenshot, you are
trying to access the portainer
container. This is not the “system”.
Ok, it’s question of terminology. Normally container run on host system … I believed that in this case containers run over Docker daemon, which in turn is running on Toradex. I apologize if I was wrong.

I really recommend that you go deeply
in detail in our Getting Started
guides

Already done before !

Please see the Step 1.

Here is citation from it:
Turn on the board. After boot, the Portainer login screen will be displayed on the monitor connected to the board. On the first access, it is necessary to set a username and password.

What about name, password ? Nothing at all !!!
So, I considered that I am free to choose name/password as I wish. Isn’t it ?
Or I missed something ?

In the Getting Started guide you will
find examples on how to use Torizon
and the Portainer example that you
found as well as more details in how
to get started and use the Toradex HW

It’s exactly what I’m trying to do. But until now without success.

Also, since your issue with Toradex
Easy Installer has been solved, let me
have this questions set as solved.

I’m not sure that issue with Installer is completely solved, as I should really catch a moment when Internet connection was stable and I could execute image install. If you consider such behavior as normal, Ok, we can consider this case as resolved.

Apalis iMX8 and the Ixora carrier
board combination should turn on the
fan if you are using Torizon version
4.0.0 and you have the fan connected on the X6 connector of the Ixora.

Well, I’ll create other topic dedicated to fan.

Sincerely,

Pavel

Hi Pavel,

Here is citation from it: Turn on the
board. After boot, the Portainer login
screen will be displayed on the
monitor connected to the board. On the
first access, it is necessary to set a
username and password.

Did you check the warning in that link?

Warning: Portainer only allows password changes within 5 minutes after it starts. If this time expires, it is not possible to set a new user/password. In this case, just reboot the board.

Did you check this? Did you also try to access through an external interface with the same result?

Alternatively, a host computer connected to the same network as the module can also access Portainer through a web interface. To access it, open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and access the address: :9000.

Being honest, I’m not completely sure in this case and there is a chance that Toradex Easy Installer doesn’t get along unstable networks, so in that case we recommend the offline installer through the newest available version (through the CI feeds).

Alvaro.

Portainer only allows password changes
within 5 minutes after it starts.

Yes !!!
It was probably the case the time I tried it … I didn’t pay attention.
Thanks !!!

One remarks on Toradex Easy Installer: there is 3rd checkbox in Feeds (f) menu. Whereas at the beginning (i.e. once window of TEI appears after reboot) the number of items in the list is quite limited (5 to be exact), once I check this 3rd checkbox and then refresh, the number of items explodes … several dozens. Difficult to explore or even calculate their numbers as if I try to move slider, image freezes and network problem start to appears.

Probably one of the reason is fan failure ?

Great, thanks for the feedback! We don’t know how to make it clearer to be honest… haha

Well the CI feed (the 3rd box) is greatly packed since it contains the nightly builds that our CI server has available, which is one per day times all the different images.

The Toradex Easy Installer image list is downloaded and then showed so once it is downloaded it really shouldn’t matter the network connectivity. I insist that you try with the latest Toradex Easy Installer nightly build (it should say something like Toradex Easy Installer 2.0b4 20200507) and see if you are having the same issues.

The Toradex Easy Installer you have in the SD card is from the 31st of December of 2019! What display connection are you using? HDMI? LVDS?
