Torizon OS 6.5.0 Quarterly Release

We are pleased to announce the Torizon OS 6.5.0 quarterly release for Toradex’s System on Modules.

Torizon OS is our operating system that powers Torizon, a DevOps platform that simplifies the development and maintenance of embedded Linux software. Torizon OS is designed to be used out-of-the-box on devices requiring high reliability, allowing you to focus on your application instead of building and maintaining an operating system.

Torizon uses software containers, making it simple to add functionality to your system in a way that is both secure and easy to maintain. Torizon supports hardware acceleration in containers and graphical user interfaces.

This release includes all updates from the previous 6.x.y Torizon OS releases.

Updates and Highlights

Torizon OS

• Provisioning at scale with custom-built Torizon OS: workflow implemented for the Torizon OS Reference Minimal Image

• Out-of-the-box eMMC health monitoring: eMMC lifetime information added to the default Torizon Device Monitoring metrics

• Update reliability on unstable connection:

  • Device monitoring data buffering is enabled, so data points are not lost
  • New configuration options improve the resilience of updates on low-bandwidth scenarios

• Device drivers included as a module:

  • Enable the Lattice RGB-HDMI bridge RGB to HDMI bridge SiI9022 on Torizon OS 6
  • Enable the TI ADS8688 ADC on Torizon OS 6
  • Enable support for the NXP PCA963X I2C LED driver on Torizon OS 6

• Important bug fixes:

  • Push images to Torizon Cloud from Yocto fails with an authentication error

• Updates from BSP 6.5.0:

  • Please also note that Torizon OS is built on top of the Toradex BSP Layers for the Yocto Project. Read the BSP Layers and Reference Images for Yocto Project release news to learn more.

Debian Packages and Containers

• Debian Containers for Torizon:

  • Containers rebuilt against the Debian 12.2 release

  • Qt 6 with a new simplified workflow focusing on the IDE, with hardware acceleration enabled by default. To get started, create a Qt 6 QML project

  • .NET 8 containers released. To get started, create a .NET 8 project

  • Verdin AM62 Support:

    • Debian feeds published
    • Containers are not stable yet and are expected to break with the CT_TAGS
• Important bug fix:
  • Cog is missing shared-mime-info package to open file:// URLs
  • Toradex’s libdrm-common on Index of /debian is interfering with libdrm armhf imx devices

Intended Use

The Torizon OS 6.5.0 Quarterly Release is a production-grade release.

Therefore, if you are in production with TorizonCore 5 or earlier Torizon OS 6 releases, we recommend moving to this quarterly release. Read the details on our Torizon OS Upgrade Notes.

• Secure Boot: Complete support for the extended chain of trust is expected in the next releases.

Hardware Support

A quarterly release is a production release, intended to be used in a production environment only with volume products, as long as they are supported by Torizon OS. We run a set of tests to validate them. Learn more about our release types from our Embedded Linux Support Strategy.

• Volume products: Verdin iMX8M Mini, Apalis iMX6, Apalis iMX8, Colibri iMX6ULL 1GB, Colibri iMX6DL, and Colibri iMX7D 1GB, and Colibri iMX8
  This release is intended to be used in production on these modules.
• Sample products: Verdin iMX8M Plus, and Verdin AM62
  Due to the hardware status being “sample”, this release is intended for development.
  For Verdin, only the second generation of Verdin products is supported.
