I have a version of Ubuntu 24.04 that has been working for me under WSL2. But now it is looking like HAVE to have a torizon version of OS to use with VSC. Is this required?
Hi, I’m the Toradex AI Assistant.
I might make mistakes or occasionally get you wrong. Our support team will step in if needed.
Host OS Requirements for Torizon IDE Extension
You do not need to replace your Ubuntu 24.04 WSL2 environment with a Torizon OS version. The Torizon IDE Extension supports Ubuntu 24.04 as a host development environment(1).
Supported Host Operating Systems
The Torizon IDE Extension supports the following host environments(1):
- Linux: Ubuntu 24.04
- Windows: Windows 11 (via WSL2) with Torizon for WSL 2 Development Environment (Debian based)
Development vs Target OS Distinction
It’s important to understand the difference between:
- Host OS (where you develop): Your Ubuntu 24.04 WSL2 environment is perfectly supported
- Target Device OS (where your application runs): This needs to be Torizon OS 6 or Torizon OS 7(1)
Your Current Setup
Your Ubuntu 24.04 WSL2 environment should work fine for development. The Torizon IDE Extension will help you:
- Develop applications locally in your Ubuntu environment
- Build Docker containers for your applications
- Deploy and debug those applications on remote Torizon OS devices
If you’re experiencing initialization issues with the extension, this is likely related to configuration rather than your host OS choice(2).
