Toradex BSP 3.0b4 missing from release notes?

Hi, I got my hands on a pretty old project using Toradex BSP 3.0 beta 4 (tagged 3.0b4.254-20200421) with iMX6ULL, but I don’t see it on the release notes: Toradex System/Computer on Modules - Linux BSP Release

There is 3.0.4 release at that same date, though. Should treat them as equal?

Hi, I’m the Toradex AI Assistant.

I might make mistakes or occasionally get you wrong. Our support team will step in if needed.

BSP 3.0b4 vs BSP 3.0.4 Clarification

Based on the Embedded Linux Release Matrix, BSP 3.0.4 is documented as the stable release for the 3 Series(1). The matrix shows:

BSP 3.0.4 for Apalis iMX6, Colibri iMX6ULL, Colibri iMX6, and Colibri iMX7(1):

  • Kernels: Downstream based NXP BSP L4.14-2.3.x(1)
  • Yocto: 2.6 / Thud(1)
  • U-Boot: Mainline based 2019.07(1)
  • Release: 04/2020(1)

The version you mentioned (3.0b4.254-20200421) appears to be a beta build that preceded the stable 3.0.4 release. The “b4” indicates it was the fourth beta version, while 3.0.4 represents the final stable quarterly release.

Recommendation

You should not treat them as equal. I recommend upgrading to BSP 3.0.4 or newer for the following reasons:

  1. Stability: BSP 3.0.4 is the stable quarterly release, while 3.0b4 was a beta version
  2. Support: Beta versions are not intended for production use and may contain unresolved issues
  3. Documentation: The stable release has complete documentation and support

Migration Path

Consider migrating to a currently supported BSP version. The documentation shows that BSP 7.x.y and BSP 6.x.y are the current releases(2), with BSP 3.x being from the EOL (End of Life) series(1).

For migration assistance, you can reference community discussions about upgrading from older BSP versions(3).

Hi @vilchanskyio!

The answer given by the Toradex AI seems reasonable. You can’t treat them as equals, but I’m pretty sure that the BSP 3.0.4 is the closest to the 3.0b4 you’ll find.

However, BSP 3.0.4 is in end-of-life (EOL), which means it is no longer maintained or supported. I would recommend migrating to a newer version, such as the BSP 7.4.0, for example.

Best regards.
