I use a type of card holder on custom carrier board which has not card detect pin. Can iMX6 and iMX8 SD controllers work without card detect pin?

did you finish you carrier board already ?
We recommend to use the card detect pin other solution did not turn out to be reliable.
like: Using DAT3/CD as card detect pin on microsd-cards
Also I recommend doing a design review by toradex.
