MIPI DSI to HDMI for Mallow board

Dear community,
We are starting a new project and want to use a Verdin imx8m mini module together with a Mallow board. For this project, we need HDMI output, but the Verdin imx8m mini module does not have native HDMI output. Therefore, we would have to use the MIPI-DSI interface with a DSI to HDMI adapter.

From previous projects, we have the Toradex DSI to HDMI adapter, but it cannot be plugged directly into the Mallow board. Is it possible to find a flexible cable in a shop that allows the MIPI-DSI (X4) output of the Mallow board to be connected to the Toradex DSI to HDMI adapter?

If this is not possible, what adapter + cable do you recommend I buy to connect to the MIPI-DSI (X4) output of the Mallow board?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Julián

Hello Julián,

Thank you for your questions and for sharing details of your setup.

The Mallow Carrier Board provides a 34-position MIPI DSI Display Connector (X4) using a Wurth 687134149022 type (Mallow Board Connector). The Toradex DSI to HDMI Adapter, on the other hand, uses a 60-pin Samtec QTH-030-02-L-D-A board-to-board connector, which is designed for direct mating with the Verdin Development Board (DSI to HDMI Adapter).

Unfortunately, these connectors are not directly compatible and differ significantly in pin count and mechanical type. Finding an off-the-shelf flexible cable or adapter that bridges a 34-pin MIPI DSI connector to the 60-pin board-to-board connector of the DSI to HDMI adapter is highly unlikely due to these differences.

Currently, there is no official Toradex DSI to HDMI adapter or cable that supports a direct connection to the Mallow board’s 34-pin MIPI DSI (X4) connector. For HDMI output from the Mallow board, you would need to look for third-party MIPI-DSI to HDMI adapters that support the 34-pin connector format found on the Mallow X4, or consider custom adapter solutions designed specifically for this pinout and connector.

To summarize:

  • There is no commercially available flexible cable to connect the Mallow board’s MIPI-DSI X4 to the Toradex DSI to HDMI Adapter due to differences in connector type and pin count (Mallow Board) (Adapter).
  • For HDMI output, search for a MIPI DSI to HDMI adapter that matches the 34-pin connector type on the Mallow board (Wurth 687134149022) or use a custom solution following the connector’s pinout.

If you need documentation about the Mallow X4 connector and DSI pinout to help source or design a compatible adapter, you can refer to the Mallow Carrier Board documentation.

If you have further questions about software or configuration for HDMI or DSI on Verdin/Torizon, feel free to ask!

Dear @jbruno,

Thank you for sharing the current hurdle you are facing. I checked this myself and saw that there indeed no native HDMI on the Verdin iMX8M Mini modules. Looking at the adapter you shared it is as you said not a fit for the Mallow carrier board, since you will not be able to connect it. I have spoken to our product management team and we unfortunately do not have an off the self solution at this point in time.

This leaves us with the following options:

  • Either you will have to create your own adapter board, which would take the MIPI-DSI signal from X4 on the Mallow board and convert it to HDMI. Here there would also be the option of getting in contact with one of our partners who could aid you in creating such an adapter or even a fully custom carrier board
  • Alternatively you could consider switching to the Verdin iMX8M Plus, which would have native HDMI.

Best regards,
Collin

Another option, in addition to the ones suggested by Collin, is to switch from the Mallow to the Yavia board, which features an onboard DSI-to-HDMI converter of the same type as the mentioned adapter.

Dear @alex.tx,
Thank you very much for your comment, but unfortunately the Yavia board meets one of the project requirements: we need an M2 key B or M socket.
Best regards,
Julián
