I noticed that Toradex BSP Layers based on Yocto Scarthgap has been released.
Our team would like to start working on porting our project to work with this latest release, but there is a lack of Mender support for Toradex SoMs in the Scarthgap branch. As we are using Mender as our firmware update solution, we will need Mender support to be present before we can start modifying our layer to work with the latest Toradex BSP release.
I’ve come across information stating that Mender ports will only be available if a customer requests for it. Is this the appropriate location for requesting updates to the Mender ports?
Thanks,
Hatsy Rei
P.S. We have not officially evaluated Torizon OS nor its update solutions, but for the time being we’d prefer sticking to Toradex BSP layers and Mender, as we’ve completed all the customizations necessary for our software and hardware to work on top of these layers.
In general, it is indeed possible to work on Yocto to bring up the support for Mender update system on top of Toradex BSP.
Yes. This one of the correct places. Another possibility is our support email: support@toradex.com.
I would say that since have Torizon Cloud to perform the online/offline updates, device monitoring, remote access, fleet management, and so on, we are not investing time on supporting other update mechanisms. And, by going with Torizon OS/Torizon Cloud, you would get all these features and benefits without the hassle of maintaining all of it yourself with a custom BSP for your device. Anyways, I will ask internally about this possibility and get back to you as soon as possible.
For sure it makes sense to keep using what you are used to. But I must ask if all the work/hassle to keep it working pays off in the long run.
Hi Henrique, I appreciate the follow up. In short, the project I’ve been working on has entered a “maintenance mode” of sorts, if you will. As our engineers move to work on different projects, we still have enough resources to update the Toradex OE distribution sources together with our own layers to Scarthgap, but there will be no plans to move to Torizon in the foreseeable future.
We acknowledge that requesting support for a third-party software update infrastructure puts Toradex in a difficult position, and understand that this cannot be addressed immediately. One way forward right now is for us to delay updating to Scarthgap until the necessary Mender support is available.
