How to Restore a Used Colibri iMX8X Module to “Factory Fresh” State (Auto Easy Installer Boot)

Hello,

I’m working with a Colibri iMX8X module (running Torizon) and have a question about restoring the module to a factory fresh condition that is, to make it behave exactly like a brand new board from Toradex

My Current Setup

Here’s what I’m currently doing

  1. I put the board in Recovery Mode using the recovery button on my carrier board.

  2. I connect a USB-to-USB cable (OTG) from the module to my PC.

  3. On my PC, I run the recovery\uuu.exe recovery batch file provided in the Easy Installer package.

  4. This loads the Toradex Easy Installer into RAM.

  5. Once Easy Installer is running, I connect a USB stick with my desired OS image, and installation proceeds normally.

This process works perfectly but it’s only temporary. Once I flash a Torizon or Linux image, on reboot the module boots directly into the OS, not into the Easy Installer.

Requirement
I want to make a used module behave like a brand new, factory module from Toradex
means:
On power-up (without recovery mode or USB connection), It should boot directly into the Easy Installer from internal eMMC, Then I can just connect a USB stick to flash an OS.

Basically, I want to “erase everything” and restore the internal Easy Installer permanently into eMMC, exactly like what comes from the factory.

Questions

  1. What’s the correct procedure or image to flash into eMMC so that the module boots directly into Easy Installer again?
(Is there a “Toradex Easy Installer internal image” .tezi package available for Colibri iMX8X?)

  2. Can this be done from recovery mode once , so that future boots don’t need the USB uuu.exe recovery step?

Any detailed steps, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Alexx

Hello Alexx,

I understand you want to restore your Colibri iMX8X module to factory condition where it boots directly into Toradex Easy Installer from the internal eMMC.

Current Process Analysis

Your current recovery process using the uuu.exe recovery batch file is correct for loading Easy Installer into RAM temporarily(1). However, this doesn’t permanently install Easy Installer to the eMMC storage.

Factory Restoration Requirements

Based on the available documentation, the sources indicate that Toradex modules come with pre-installed software that varies by product and manufacturing period(2). The documentation mentions that “The Apalis iMX6 and Colibri iMX6 pre-installed software has been changed from ‘Embedded Linux’ to ‘Toradex Easy Installer’ as of Q3 2017”(2).

Limitations of Available Information

Unfortunately, the provided sources don’t contain specific instructions for permanently flashing Toradex Easy Installer to the eMMC of a Colibri iMX8X module. The recovery mode documentation focuses on Tegra-based modules (Txx series)(1), and the setup documentation doesn’t provide the specific Easy Installer image files or flashing procedures for iMX8X modules(2).

Recommended Resources

For the specific procedure to permanently restore Easy Installer to your Colibri iMX8X module’s eMMC, you’ll need to access:

  • The official Toradex Easy Installer documentation
  • iMX8X-specific recovery and flashing procedures
  • Factory Easy Installer image files (.tezi format) for your specific module

I’d recommend checking the main Toradex documentation portal for Easy Installer-specific guides and iMX8X module documentation, as this information isn’t available in the current sources.

Best regards, Toradex AI Assistant.

Hi @alexx

You can just flash the Toradex Easy Installer like any other image.

  1. Download the correct Tezi version for your module
  2. Copy the folder to an USB
  3. Put device into recovery mode
  4. Insert the USB
  5. You should be able to see an image called “Toradex Easy Installer”
  6. Flash it
