Confirmation on Torizon OTA Support for Advantech i.MX95 AFE-E420

Hi Team,

Previously, we worked on OTA updates for the SMARC i.MX95 platform using Torizon OS, and OTA functionality was working as expected.

We are now planning to work with the Advantech i.MX95 EVK (AFE-E420) and would like to confirm the following:

  • Does Torizon OS OTA (Torizon Platform / Torizon OTA) officially support the Advantech i.MX93 AFE-E420?
  • If supported, are there any specific limitations, prerequisites, or recommended configurations when using Torizon OTA on this board?
  • If not officially supported, is there a recommended approach or roadmap for enabling OTA on Advantech i.MX93 platforms?

This confirmation will help us decide the software stack and OTA strategy for our upcoming development.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,
Renuvaraprasad

Hi, I’m the Toradex AI Assistant.

I might make mistakes or occasionally get you wrong. Our support team will step in if needed.

Based on the available documentation, I cannot find specific information about official support for the Advantech i.MX95 AFE-E420 board with Torizon OS OTA.

Current Torizon i.MX95 Support Status

The documentation shows that Torizon OS support for i.MX95 platforms is planned for Q2 2025(1). The collaboration between Toradex and NXP extends Torizon to NXP FRDM development boards, starting with the FRDM i.MX 93 development board(2).

Torizon Hardware Portability

However, Torizon OS is designed to be portable across NXP i.MX-based designs(2). The platform is fully Open Source and provides references on how to integrate it with custom hardware(3). Thanks to its easy-to-use configuration tools and open-source codebase, Torizon OS is easily portable to most NXP i.MX–based designs, enabling teams to standardize on one platform across product lines and avoid vendor lock-in(2).

OTA Update Features

Torizon’s OTA update system is built with reliability in mind, using OSTree technology that outperforms A/B updates in many aspects and will not brick your device in case of a bad connection or sudden power cut(4). The platform includes built-in secure OTA, device monitoring, and remote access for long-term maintenance(2).

Recommendation

Since specific support for the Advantech AFE-E420 isn’t documented in the available sources, I’d recommend:

  1. Checking the most recent documentation at the Torizon documentation(5)
  2. Exploring the supported hardware section for NXP development kits(3)
  3. Given that Torizon is open source and designed for portability across i.MX platforms, integration may be possible with custom development work

For the most current information about specific board support and integration guidance for the Advantech i.MX95 AFE-E420, you may want to check the latest updates on supported hardware.

Best regards, Toradex AI Assistant.

I don’t have specific information about official support for the Advantech i.MX93 AFE-E420 board in the available documentation.

Torizon OS Hardware Support

The documentation indicates that Torizon OS is designed to be portable across different hardware platforms (1). The platform includes support for various hardware targets beyond just Toradex modules (1). However, the specific Advantech i.MX93 AFE-E420 board is not explicitly mentioned in the available sources.

OTA Update Capabilities

Torizon provides secure and reliable over-the-air (OTA) updates built from the ground up with security and reliability in mind (2). The OTA system uses OSTree technology and is resistant to unreliable networks and power cuts (2). The platform includes automotive-grade security built-in following the proven Uptane standard (2).

Development Options

For hardware not directly supported, Torizon OS offers flexibility through its open-source nature (3). The platform is free and open-source, based on open software with no lock-in, and is portable on almost any hardware platform (3). It’s customizable to your needs and built with the Yocto Project (3).

Recommendation

Since I don’t have specific information about the Advantech i.MX93 AFE-E420 support, I’d recommend checking these potentially useful sources:

Would you like me to provide a general answer about Torizon’s hardware portability capabilities based on my knowledge instead?

Greetings @Kenchekkagari123,

We do not support the “Advantech i.MX93 AFE-E420” with Torizon Cloud. There is no roadmap for this and it’s not something we are considering at the present time.

Unofficial support can theoretically be added. But it would involve creating a custom OS image for this hardware that supports everything necessary for Torizon Cloud compatibility. Our meta-layer has references on how this could be done for non-Toradex machines: GitHub - torizon/meta-toradex-torizon: Torizon OS OpenEmbedded Distro Layer

Best Regards,
Jeremias
